Top 5 Current Pests According to Customer Calls

Posted on June 3, 2011 with 2 Comments

We encounter a wide variety of pests year-round, but our customers’ phone calls have provided us with a list of the top 5 pests they are encountering right now.

Be on the look-out for any of these pests…they’re proving to be fairly popular right now!

1.      Carpenter Ants: One of the largest ant types, typically seen in black. Although they do not eat, they hollow out wood which can inflict severe damage to your home. They are attracted to areas that include moisture and rotting wood. Be sure to follow our do-it-yourself methods to protect your home or business from these crawling insects.

2.      Carpenter Bees: Similar in action to carpenter ants, carpenter bees hollow out wooded areas such as the structure of your home, playgrounds, or decks. Take action against these flying pests before they cause a great economic strain on you and your family.

3.      Stink Bugs: That’s right, they do smell! Stink bugs have scent glands which release an unpleasant odor. Once these pests have made their way into your home, they tend to help themselves to your fruits or vegetables you may have out on the counter. If you come across a stink bug, make a point to find the entry way to prohibit future visitors. If you are unable to locate the entry point right away, conceal all fruits and vegetables for the time being so these pests do not eat them before you get the chance to!

4.      Yellow Jackets: Although sometimes called underground bees, these are actually a type of wasp that become easily agitated when the nose from above disturbs their underground nesting place. Underground bees reuse burrows or holes from moles or mice to build their nests. They are distinguishable from other yellow jackets by size…they are much smaller, but still as mighty!

5.      Mice: A pest that is bothersome year-round, but we are currently receiving mass phone calls to help combat them! Mice do not cause much physical damage, but they spread various diseases such as Salmonella and tapeworm through the droppings they leave behind. Make sure to implement proper sanitation methods in your home or place of business to decrease activity levels of these rodents.

Watch out for Ants invading your home!

Posted on June 25, 2010 with 2 Comments

A few days ago, BusinessWire posted an article about ants invading homes.  Ants love to enter people’s homes, either for food, water, or shelter.   Ants are a very big nuisance to people and they are very hard to control since they are small and usually travel in large numbers.  People should be most concerned with these four types of ants:

Carpenter Ants: They tend to chew wood and cause destruction to your home.

Fire Ants: They tend to sting when their nest is disturbed and they will likely sting a few times rather than just one.  The sting is pretty painful to humans.

Odorous House Ants:  These ants give off a foul smell when squashed, so be careful which ants you want to step on!

Argentine Ants:  They are known to contaminate food that they come in contact with.

There are some precautions you can take to prevent ants including the following:

  • Eliminate water, do not leave small puddles around
  • Keep all food sealed
  • Make sure tree branches aren’t close to your home
  • Keep all firewood away from the home
  • Seal all cracks

Ant control can be a real hassle. Here at JP McHale, we offer treatments to control your ant problems.  JP McHale is a Westchester Pest Control company.  We would love to help you with your pest problem! Contact us by phone 800-479-2284, email, live chat, twitter, or facebook.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a Flying Ant!

Posted on June 23, 2010 with No Comments

Yesterday, WINK News published an article about flying ants and termites and how they are starting to emerge.  When the rainy season comes around and colonies are getting big, male ants and termites will develop wings and fly away to find a mate and a new colony.  Since the pests are nocturnal, you will see smarms of them in the night time. A tip for home owners is to keep all lights off at night time so the ants and termites are not attracted to your home.  Once the males find their mate, they will shed their wings and start a new colony.  Both carpenter ants and termites can do a sufficient amount of damage to your home, so feel free to call JP McHale for an estimate. Bug boom in Texas!

Posted on June 7, 2010 with No Comments

The Dallas Morning News published an article over the weekend about how all kinds of insects are reported to increase in numbers throughout the state.  This year, in particularly, there is expected, and has already been, a rise in ants, termites, snakes, mosquitoes, and bed bugs due to the warm and wet seasons.  Pest control companies have received almost double the amount of calls in the last few months. Instead of seeing a couple of insects flying around residents are seeing swarms of them. These insects are more than just as nuisance to humans.  Termites are known to cause 2.5 billion dollars of damage to homes, and add that to the amount of money carpenter ants and bees tally, that’s a lot of money!  Luckily in this season there has not been a West Nile case yet, but there are many more mosquitoes than past seasons.  The health department in Dallas recently set up a mosquito trap that they hoped would capture a few hundred mosquitoes, which ended up catching a thousand.  Texas is not the only state that has a bad bug problem so if you have any problems with pests feel free to contact us by phone 800-479-2284, email, facebook, live chat, or twitter.

Termites and Carpenter Ants are Swarming!

Posted on May 24, 2010 with No Comments

An article recently published in Boston Real Estate Now explains how since the warm weather is coming, home owners can expect to see termites and carpenter ants to be found in their homes.  Some people might get confused on which pest is which, but if you know what each looks like, you will be able to identify them.

Left: Eastern Subterranean Termites, Right: Carpenter Ant

Termites have a 3/8″ dark brown body and wings. The wings will range from transparent to milky white.  Termites actually eat wood unlike carpenter ants that just hollow out wood.  Carpenter ants range from 1/4″ to 3/8″. These ants are most commonly found in black. Both of these pests like to nest in damp wood.  To tell if the termites or ants are affecting your house without actually seeing the pests, look around the base of your house for saw dust. If your find any signs of either of these pests make sure your seek pest control experts immediately.  Little pests in large group can cause a sufficient amount of damage.  If you have an ant or termite problem, contact us by phone 800-479-2284, website, email, facebook, twitter, or live chat.

Some Helpful Information About Termites And Carpenter Ants For This Upcoming Summer

Posted on February 23, 2010 with 1 Comment

Finding and controlling termites and carpenter ants is no easy task. While they may be crucial to nature, these insects are causing problem after problem in modern homes. Carptenter ants are basically inevitable, they will at one time invade your home, but termites are a different story. They cause over two billion dollars in damage to homes every year.

There are two types of termites common to our area, dampwood and subterranean. These dampwood pests live in wood rather than underground chambers and are more common. The subterranean type feed on wood coming in to contact with soil, and may even create tubes connecting their homes to a nearby wood source. If these tubes are broken and removed, ants could get in and attack them, which is good for the homeowner. Wood should always be kept dry and rot free, and should also never be touching any part of your home. According to the Northwest Coalition for Alternatives to Pesticides, it takes years for termites to infest your home badly enough for serious damage. If you remove or replace rotted sections of infested wood, it may temporary eliminate the problem.

In the Pacific Northwest, carpenter ants are much more frequent and do not feed on wood. Although they can be dangerous because their nests are difficult to locate, but will hollow the wood out, leaving behind frass (sawdust). One way to see if you ave carpenter ants is if these is frass or sawdust located on the floor. The NCAP recommends repairing any leaks, keeping shrubbery clear of exterior walls and foundation vents, and maintaining at least 12 inches of clean concrete between wooden siding and surrounding soil. Also, no wood should be kept underneath the home and gutters should be kept clean and clear. Follow these to save yourself from the hassle of termites and carpenter ants.

If you think you have a termite infestation or carpenter ants, please contact us. Both of these pests are covered under our Guardian Program.
